Essential Oils to Soothe Menstrual Cramps
Let us start off by clarifying that essential oils while smelling pretty and having some physiological effects, are not proven medicine and not a substitute for seeing an actual physician.
However, that being said, they can have a soothing effect on the body and the mind.
You can diffuse the oils with a nebulizing diffuser or dilute them with a bit of water or some unscented lotion and rub them on your skin for a pleasant scent that stays with you.
Particularly pay attention to areas where you are cramping and massage the oils in there. Or to take the relaxation a step further, add a few drops to a warm bath of one of these top five essential oils:
ROSE
Ah, roses. They smell good, they look pretty and just plain make you feel like you are in a fairy tale. Also? Rose oil has been linked to stimulating correct hormone levels, which in turn can regulate your menstrual cycle. Plus, they can help reduce pain from cramping and their overall calming nature decreases basic symptoms of PMS.

CHAMOMILE
Another fabulous flower, chamomile essential oils are often associated with calming properties. For both the restless body and the spinning mind, chamomile is a soothing friend. From anxiety to stress to feelings of irritability, a few drops of this calming flower can really set everything at ease. But that’s not all – it also has natural anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce cramps and pains associated with your period in muscles.
LAVENDER
Not only does this oil smell like the fresh French countryside, but it is also one of the best essential oils in terms of all-around properties. It has been known to improve blood circulation (which means reduced cramps at this time of the month) and it is also another calming and relaxing oil that soothes a whirring mind and can help reduce the stress that comes along with having PMS.
YLANG-YLANG
Do you ever find yourself feeling down in the dumps while on your period? This oil is widely regarded as a natural antidepressant and so can help even out those PMS-related mood swings. Also a sedative, this is a great way to calm yourself down and help if you find yourself having trouble sleeping or feeling overly anxious. And, lastly, it is also one of nature’s medical marvels as it contains antispasmodic properties, which means it is a hero in the fight against muscle cramps.
EUCALYPTUS
Not just for cute koalas, this plant oil is a friend to women, too. While boasting an instantly recognizable, pleasing smell, it also is another anti-inflammatory friend for those of us suffering from menstrual cramps. That aforementioned distinctive smell, too, means it lends itself well as a decongestant that can lead to an improved mood thanks to a resulting dip in irritability.
Hopefully, your period can be improved a bit by some pleasing smells and some – fingers crossed! – relaxing properties.
